My Hiking Gear
I hike with a lot of stuff, so I’m only going to highlight some key items or products that have been especially useful to me.
Spring-Summer-Fall:
- Pack: I think the Osprey Talon 22 is really awesome; I have plenty of room without it being too big. There are also all sorts of little touches Osprey added that set it apart.
- Shoes: on my feet are North Face Hedgehogs—very comfortable and the waterproofing is great, but I’ve been disappointed by its lack of grip when it really counted, as well as the durability of the shoes. These Hedgehogs seem better suited for lower altitude, lower intensity hikes than what you’ll typically find in the White Mountains.
- Poles: Black Diamond Distance Z—the straps aren’t super durable, but I love these poles otherwise. Light, effective, and pack down small.
- Filtration: you can trust the awards and rave reviews from AT thru-hikers: the Sawyer Squeeze is amazing. Forget gross tablets or weird contraptions.
- Socks: I’m completely sold on Darn Tough and wear their stuff even when not hiking. I tend to wear the thick hiking versions even during summer because I’d rather have the extra padding and simply tolerate the added foot warmth.
